It follows Connell and Marianne from a small town in County Sligo through school and into university in Dublin, tracking the pull between them that neither can quite name and neither can leave alone. Rooney writes about class, power, and intimacy with a plainness that feels almost transparent, and the effect is that you forget you are reading.

Pick this over the start-here book if you would rather begin with something contemporary and character-driven than a period piece. It is a modern love story more than a state-of-the-nation novel, but the Ireland it describes, small towns and university towns, money and its absence, is unmistakably the country as it is now.
